This evening I’ll be joining a workshop hosted by Out On The Page. I’m pretty nervous about it but excited too. In the first meeting we’ll be discussing characters. We were asked to think about recent books or short stories and the characters in them. My brain went blank, I could not remember anything I’d read recently and felt like an utter fraud. Dyslexia plays a big part in what I can read, I’m a big fan of audio books, however recently I’ve been listening to a lot of non-fiction. When my anxiety is high I find it difficult to engage in media which involve big emotional states. The last full fiction book I read on audible is The Gracekeepers by Kirsty Logan. A beautiful and original tale but I believe that was roughly six months ago.
But then I remembered graphic novels! I’m currently reading Glass Town by Isabel Greenberg, and Tom Parkinson-Morgan’s Kill Six Billion Demons before that I read Persephone and before that The Tea Dragon Festival. My imposter syndrome began to lessen. Whether it’s because of the reduction in sertraline or just general improvement in my mental health I’ve felt more comfortable reading again. My Best friend just sent me a YA novel, Pet by Akwaeke Emezi, After reading the first page I’m really looking forward to delving into the story. With my handy green overlay as a book mark. I cannot recommend these filters enough for anyone who has visual disturbances whilst reading.
Wish me luck Folx and thanks for reading
